AS4 : T5 - T4 re-draft

I had created an advert for the product called Lucozade, the reason for choosing this specific product was due to the fact that everyone in the group uses the product, at it is a popular product with the public. The target audience for our advert and product would be people between the ages 12 - 15, as this would be the age range of who we thought would actually be buying our product. The reasons for this decision was due to the fact that they are generally the people who are most active and to be doing ports such as football and rugby, which are the biggest type of people who buy the product. For any advert, there has to be a unique selling point, our unique selling point of the advert would be that the Lucozade hydrates / energises the taker more than water, also it is trying to say that it benefits and is available to the ordinary public not just to the professionals.

Once we had finished creating our advert, the next step was to try to gain feedback from people based on our finished product, to find out what interests them about the advert, and also to see what could have been taken out / improved. In order to gain the feedback for our advert we used two methods, which was a focus group, which meant we had to stand in front of the audience, show them the advert and ask relevant questions. This was a good method as it allowed us to ask them the questions and get the answers there and then. The other method to gain feedback from the public was an online survey, this allowed for an unlimited amount of people to answer the questions as it would be available on the internet, which anyone could answer. To create these surveys i used a site called Survey Monkey, this was useful as the site is popular and already has a good pool of people available to answer  my questions.

When doing the survey we asked two types of questions, either quantitate or qualitative, thus giving us types of answers for us to evaluate and use for our results. When asking qualitative questions, we used open style questions in order to get a more detailed explanation of their choice, and the reasoning behind it. The example of the qualitative question that was used within our survey would be 'What was the overall message of the advert?'. I used this question to see if the audience actually got the meaning behind the advert 'that Lucozade hydrates / energises you better than water', as if they could not grasp it in the time period of the advert shown, thus meaning we needed to try and make that point more clear for our audiences. When asking the quantitative questions, we used closed style questions, therefore allowing us to group and graph the audiences answers together and see what one was most popular / successful. An example of our closed style question would be 'What do you rate the advert out of 10? 10 being the highest', therefore we could see how successful our advert was to the audience, by doing closed questions out of 10, we could group and then graph the answers to see what our audience thought averagely.

The method to gain feedback was our focus group, this was presented to people of a mixed of people who were our target audience and people who was not our target audience. This allowed us to see how the general public would see our advert when flicking through the channels, to see if everyone would like to watch our advert, not just those we aimed it at. The benefit of doing a focus group is the fact we was able to not only ask the same questions as our survey, but also as explain some of the questions, if one of the audience members did not understand, you as the presenter could ask follow-up questions in order to gain a more detailed answer, if what they gave wasn't enough or did not really answer the question in a way that could benefit you. Even though it is really beneficial in that way, we decide to still do the other method in the form of a survey so that we could get a wider range of audience feedback, as we could ask everyone in the world, not just our school peers and teachers. Another reason would be the fact that focus groups are very time consuming as it tasks a lot of time to find a time that fits everyone, actually doing the presentation and also the making of the presentation.

Once we gathered the audience feedback through the survey and focus group, the results where then analysed for the use of our group to see if successful. Once looked over the results, we saw that we had a mix of responses from our audience, with some being positive feedback and some negative criticism / improvements needing to be made. Even though we had gathered was a mixture, the majority of them was good pointers about how good our advert was. They said that they liked the set out of our advert, like how we showed the distinction between them being even, then one starts to tire and once drinks lucozade they both get energised and are even once again. This benefited us as it showed that the overall message was able to be detected by the audience. The improvements that got suggested was that the fact that maybe we could have shown the distinction between him drinking water, to then go onto Lucozade, as some of the audience did not notice that the tired one switched, as the drinking scene was not long enough.

From the feedback was gathered there were a few surprises that came up, especially when performing our survey. The surprise was the fact that it mainly attracted the male population (did also attract to females, but not as much), where as our target audience was both genders. This proven when performing our focus group as some, not all of the female audience it a lower rating to that of the male members. Another surprise was at first it took a few of them a while to figure out what our overall message was, due to the fact that the drinking scene went a bit too fast in the advert, but overall the rest knew what our message was, so to improve the advert i would of dragged out the drinking scene a bit more so make the distinction between the water and Lucozade more clear.

When performing our focus group and showing our survey, i felt the questions asked was useful and helped us gain a high standard of feedback from our audience members. If i was doing it again an improvement i would have liked to make to one of our questions would be the 'Who would you say the advert is aimed at?' as this just gets an answer of who they felt it was aimed out. The change i would have made would have been to put 'and why?' at the end of the question, to see why they thought this and the reasoning behind their answer. This would have benefit me more as i maybe could have done some changes to the video / editing to try and gain the wider audiences.

Before we started to film and edit our advert, i had in my head of how i wanted my advert to look and how it was going to promote the product and gain new potential customers. In my opinion, i felt that in that way it was a success. As it successfully promotes the product (Lucozade), while also attracting new audience members, though the entertainment value and the relation to a popular sport (football). Even though i am possible being a bit biased as it was my advert, the feedback from the result saying i averaged and 8 out of 10 in ratings and 86% of the survey takers saying that they would buy the product after seeing my advert, thus giving me reasons to believe it was a success. Even though it was very successful, i still felt that i could have improved it more to maybe gain a 9/10 out of 10, and maybe move the percentage onto the 90's.

One of the improvement would be how long i show the drinking of the drinks, this would have to be done during the editing stages of the production of the advert, therefore it would not take as long to make these corrections. Another would be to incorporate another actor so that there could be a female or just remove one of the male actors to include a female. Therefore it would attract more female members as they see that it can benefit them, but also attracting males to watch the advert as they may find the woman in the advert appealing. I agree with my audience feedback and have taken it 'on board' as the points that they made, was also pointed / similar points have been made out to me through survey results,as well as the focus group's results.

I felt that technically that the advert was a success as our camera was steady throughout most of the shooting, our editing was smooth and it flowed really well with no pauses and it goes well with the music. But at one point of shooting, when our actors are drinking the water and Lucozade together, the camera raises slightly. I felt that it is very clear at what product we was trying to sell through the advertisement, as not only was they drinking the product during the activities, but as they left the whole screen fades out onto three big bottles of Lucozade, with the slogan 'Faster, Stronger, Longer'. The advert does successfully sell the product, which is supported by the figures gathered through my survey and focus group results. The idea of the advert was good as it relates to one of, if not the most popular sport in the world. Therefore it has a vast amount of people who are going to watch the advert as it is based on football, also it would be show during the football games, therefore a lot of our target audience will see the advert.

The things that i would have liked to improve in the advert would have been the fact that it did not attract as many female audience members as i would have liked. Therefore to improve this i would have included a female actor somewhere in the advert. This would have to have been done way back in the pre - production part during the making of the story board, to include three actors. The other improvement i would have like to  have made would have been the slogan to say 'Faster, Stronger, For Longer' as that emphasises the 'for part, which was our point of the advert, the fact that you can go further when drinking Lucozade, to that of water as you are more hydrated.

After assessing all the feedback gathered and my advert, i felt that the advert did achieve the aim of promoting the advert to new and existing buyers to the benefits of drinking Lucozade. The other aim was to just primarily incase the sales of Lucozade, which the majority said they would (86%). Also to make sure that the advert was entertaining for our audience, which i felt we also acheived as it got averagly rated an 8 out of 10, which is very good, but i still felt that if we made a few adjustments we might have been able to reach the 10 out of 10 mark. Therefore after looking at all the information gathered i am very happy with the finished advert and feel that it was a success.

SurveyMonkey

The link / video above are my two methods i am going to be talking about. One is the film footage of my screening, the other is a link to my survey, which people took in order for me to gain more feedback from a wider range of audience.

The feedback from my screening was very useful as it allowed me to present to a group of people my finished product (advert). The feedback they gave was very useful as all the answers was based on the advert they just watched, not other Lucozade advert that was already out. By just showing my advert it allowed me to gain information  on how much my advert would directly affect / interest the public and how well it should sell. Therefore the feedback gained was used with my survey results to see what type of audience it actually attracted, rather than what we wanted it to attract, but in actually fact we attracted out target audience of young, active people.

My findings from my survey was very useful as it allowed me to gain feedback from people who lived all over the world, not just from my school. Therefore i gained information of how well my product and who my product was going to be sold to, and what places / times showing my advert, would have the most impact. Below are some of my findings which was gathered by my questionnaires through Survey Monkey.

AS4: T2

Create your free online surveys with SurveyMonkey , the world's leading questionnaire tool.

In-order to gain audience feedback, i mainly used three different techniques, these techniques was a focus group, survey monkey questionnaire and finally a screening of my final advert. The focus group was were i gathered other companies adverts, and used them to generate two of my own advert ideas. I then had to pitch the two ideas to the audience and i used their feedback along with the survey monkey results to pick my final advert. Survey Monkey is an online questionnaire site, that allows people from around the world to answer your questions, to gain a bigger audience range. Finally the screening was when i presented my finished advert to the audience and gathered feedback from what they said during the showing.

The pros and cons of using:

  • A Focus Group - The pros of using a focus group before doing the advert, is that you can see what the audience / buyers are attracted to, threw previous adverts. You are also able then to use the feedback to create examples of your own, and then do a focus group in order to find out what this audience found the more interesting, and which one is more likely to get them to buy the product (Lucozade). The cons of using a focus group are the fact, that the feedback is only limited to those who are in the room / my school, as they are the only ones who are going to be able to come to my focus group, therefore i don't get a wide variety of audience members, they are all male / female teenagers, except from the odd teacher involved.

  • Survey Monkey - The pros of using survey monkey are the fact you could gather answers from people all around the world, therefore your variety of feedback will be really good, compared to the other methods. It also allows you to reach out to the existing of the product and gain their thoughts of the product. The cons of this method are that you do not know who's doing your questionnaire, therefore they could be lying or putting false information into their answers just to skip the questionnaire entirely.

  • My Screening - The pros of the screening are that you can actually se what the public think of your finished advert, and see if it makes them want to buy the product. Also you can see which type of audience group it actually attracts as you can see which type of member like which part / the whole of the advert. The cons of using this advert are the fact you also can only show it to a minority number of audience members that are available in the school / class.

The range of audience i gathered feedback from was very limited, as i was only able to gather pupils from my class / school and any teachers that was free. Therefore my audience ranged from teenage males and females (from the ages 16-18) and also one male teacher (who's feedback was very useful and detailed.

The i asked multiple types of questions, from closed questions (yes or no) and also open questions. I used closed questions so that they could not answer me in a bleak way, they had to say what they thought, for example "Does this advert make you want to buy this product" i only required a yes or a no answer, not a "dunno" as they would not have benefit me. I also used Open questions in order to gain a more detailed answer, such as "what did you like about the advert, and why?" this allowed me to know what the audience thought was the most interesting, to that would be the selling point of the product would be.

I felt that the feedback my audience members gave me was reliable and useful. It was useful due to the fact that most, if not all, my audience was people i would be aiming my advert at (young adults), therefore the information i gathered was put to good use as i could see if it attracted my target / desired audience. The feedback was also reliable as it included my teachers and peers, therefore they would give their actual answers as they would need me to be involved in their screenings.

An improvement i would have made about the focus group and the screening would be to have gathered some outside audience members, maybe family / friends of mine, the existing audience or maybe my teachers. Also an improvement i would made to the survey monkey would to have included a question asking the audiences age, gender and also where they are from, therefore i could pick out the relevant information, as if a 70 year old man answered my survey it would generally be irrelevant as he is unlikely to be involved in active sports such as athletics, football or rugby.

AS4 : T1 - Sources of Information

Sources of Information

Proposal
The proposal document was used as an overall guideline for us to follow, for when filming our advert. Such as when we was actually filming, we related back to our proposal for how and what actions we was going to film and at what angles, also to where we was actually going to film. This document became very useful to us we could re-mind our selfs of actually how we wanted to film and where we was going to do it. If we was going to do another video, either amateur or professional, i would make it more detailed. Either that be of the shots, camera angles, where we are going to film, who is going to be in it and also when we are going to do it.

Contact Details
The contact details document consist of all the cast and crews contact details. This is a useful document for us to have, as if for some reason someone was late are the set was unavailable for what ever reason, we could contact them to warn them or see if they and when they are coming in. If i was going to do a professional contact list, i would have had to include a lot more people on it, also more detailed information such as their address and postcode.

Costumes and Props
The costumes and props documentation was used so that we could keep track and form a list of what equipment we needed exactly such as what colour cones and what type of ball, also what outfit our actors needed to wear and how to wear them. This document was very useful as before each time we filmed we had to go over the list to make sure that everything was on the set in the appropriate place before we actually shot the film. If this was for my next filming project i would make sure that everyone involved had a list that was for them personally, so that we all wasn't relying on one list that i had, but everyone could prepare for themselves making it easier and quicker for everyone involved.

Budget
This documentation was all theoretical as we didn't actually have to buy any of the equipment, as all the recording related equipment the schools media department gave it to us, our costumes was our own that we already had, the equipment used in filming such as ball and cones was given to us by the schools pe department and finally our filming location was the schools leisure centre, therefore we didn't have to pay a fee to use it, as it was a school related project. If this was a real / professional project then it would be a lot more detailed, making it very important. As this is a guideline for everyone to follow as they need to keep their spending below whatever they stated as their maximum.

Risk Assessment
The risk assessment documentation is important as you have to think of the safety of your cast, crew and technical equipment. For example if it rains the floors surface may be too slippery so it would be up to the group to assess the situation and decide not to film for the well-being of the actors, and also the equipment as it may get wet and destroyed if it starts to rain. It was quite useful as before we filmed we checked over the risk assessment list and made sure that there was not any risks where we was going to film, such as checking the weather before we left to make sure the weather was suitable. If we was going to be filming for real, we would of had a more detailed list of possible problems. Also we would have kept the list on us while filming in case anything came up, for example it started to rain, thus the risk assessment would have the appropriate cause of action to take in case of such an event.

Filming Location
Our location for where we did our filming was the Robert Clack Leisure Centre. This piece of documentation was not that important as all the people involved goes to Robert Clack, therefore we all knew were the leisure centre was located. If we was doing a professional film, this documentation will be very important as the filming would have been done in multiple locations, and all the people involved generally would have been from other areas, therefore they will not know where to / how to get to the destination.

Call Sheet
The call sheet would be a sheet of basic information, such as what crew and cast members are doing what, where and when meetings are being held (plus who has to go to each meeting), how we would get all the equipment and clothing, and also how everyone would be catered for. This documentation for us was not that useful as every member of the group new what they had to do, they knew where and when we was filming as every time we filmed in was during our media lesson plus we just meet outside the leisure centre. We knew that most of the equipment and props would be provided by the school, and what wasn't supplied we would already have at home. Finally everyone in the group knew that they would not be catered for as it was our project, so they knew if they wanted food they would have to bring their own, but there was a water fountain that everyone could use.

Overall
The most useful documentations was the contact details and the risk assessment, as sometimes there  would be someone late, therefore we would need the contact details list to find their number so that we could get a hold of them to find out where they were, plus that person could also get in contact with us if there was a reason they wasn't coming in. The risk assessment is useful as we had to think of the groups and the equipments safety before we filmed, as if any equipment got broke or someone was injured we wouldn't be able to film anyway.

The least useful documentation for us was the budget and the filming location as everything that would have cost money for a normal filming company, we got for free as was either given to us by the school or we already had it at home. Also the filming location was not useful as we all knew where and how to get to the filming location, as we have been to it before and it is located on our schools grounds.

The documentation that need the most improving done would be call sheet as there could have been a lot more information put onto the sheet to make it more useable by all the cast a crew not just one person in charge of gathering it all.

AS3 : T2

In order to produce our advert, we needed to carry out various tasks for the production to go ahead and for it to be a success. First of all we needed to sign out the equipment that we needed to actually film, this included a camera, tripod and an SD card. In order for the school to grant us permission to use the equipment, we needed to insert our names and the date into the schools log book, to know who, when and what was taken and by who. Once we had finished the filming, we needed to sign and date all the equipment back into the school.

In order to make sure that our advert had enough lighting and the same / similar lighting each time we shoot for our advert, we filmed it the same time of day and also around the time before lunch so that the sun was high in the sky, so to not only maximise our filming time but also the lighting.

Once we started filming, i instructed them, by telling the actors what i wanted them to do, step by step and also informed my crew where and how i wanted to film the actors performing. This benefit us for our advert as this allowed us to manage what was going on effectively, and made sure that we followed our plan. But when actually filming, sometimes the plan was a bit basic so we may have decided as a group to change something of the movements, angles and performances while out there.

I concidered the health and safety of our actors and crew, as when filming i advised the crew and actors to put on suitable clothing so that they would not be too hot, i advised the actors to wear sun protector so that they did not get burned while in the sun all day. I also made sure that the crew and staff was well hydrated by making sure that there was water and Lucozade available for the crew and actors if need it.

When i was finally finished filming my advert and was ready to move onto editing it, i had to rearrange my clips as there was many bloopers, clips we decided not to use, times when the actors did something wrong, and more. In order for me to tell which one was which (as i had so many clips) i labelled them and deleted the ones that i was not going to use, thus making it easier for me to find the correct clips that i wanted to use for my advert.

One of the many effects i had to use was the fade tool, in order to do this technique i had to select the 'pen tip' icon in the bottom - middle - left hand of the screen. Once selected it, a black line will appear on the clip located on the timeline, i then had to go to where i wanted the fade to start and then click a little further down the line to where i wanted the fading to end (generally at the end of the clip). I then had to select the last dot and drag it all the way down in order to make the screen turn completely black.

Another effect i decided to use was Live Type, in order to put text into my advert. This tool / effect is one of the more simpler to create and use effectively.

The more complicated effect i used was layering, as to make it look like a real advert you have to get good imaged to layer, so that it makes sense and also the use of offer techniques such as fading for the image being layers so that it does not come on the screen too quickly.

I had to import the music i used, i did this by finding a good song that goes with my advert. Once found it i had to convert the songs URL and convert it into a MP3. Once i had done this, i could import it onto my advert and sync it up to my advert so that the song made sense.

I also used adobe photoshop, in order to create lucozade bottles in order for me to use as my final ending. This was quite easy as the task i needed to perform was to delete the bottles background, it was made easier by the fact that i was already familiar with photoshop. The reason i wanted to add a bottle was so that the last thing the audience sees (most likely to remember) is my product, and so that the audience can just focus on our product also.

After i had finished editing my advert, and it was at the level i wanted it at, i had the job of rendering it. This tool allows the user to take the advert out of Final Cut Express but still keep its high definition quality and professional look.

In order to get my advert onto the internet, i decided to upload it onto my YouTube page. This was a simple and quick process, and it only required me to perform a drag and drop from my desktop to the download page, then only required me to title the advert.

Once uploaded, it was available for anyone to view, as long as they have access to YouTube, which only requires internet access.
